This part of my series on our experiences at the Family Forward Conference. For my overall impressions, visit here.
During our visit, we stayed at the Loews Portofino Bay resort. It is a beautiful Italian-village themed hotel. Every detail on the property is really reflects a stay in the Italian village Portofino from the cars parked outside to the greetings used by the staff to the music in the common areas. I really felt like we were traveling without a passport. Can you see this view?
Since it is part of the Universal Orlando Resort, your check-in helps get you in the spirit of visiting the parks with branded room keys. However, if you choose not visit the parks, you’d be perfectly happy staying at the hotel and enjoying all the onsite restaurants, the swimming pools, the spa and everything else you would expect from a luxury resort like Loews. My husband and I agreed that would love to stay here and just experience the hotel for a getaway without visiting the parks even. However, I would highly recommend staying on property if you’re planning to visit Universal. By staying on property, you receive an extra hour of time in the park and free Express passes which allow you to skip to the front of most of the ride lines. They were more than worth any extra costs from staying at a cheaper location.
We were fortunate to win an upgrade to one of five Despicable Me Kid Suites as part of the Family Forward conference! My family loved this suite (my two year old even said “I want the Minion bed” our first night home). It made quite the impression on us all. The first room is an adult room with a standard king size bed and glass doors that opened onto a patio overlooking the square. Then you go through a clearly marked door to the kid’s room. The room is really a kids dream. It’s totally Minion themed from the floor (inlaid design in the carpet) to ceiling (check out the border). The full-sized beds are designed as missiles just like Margo, Agnes & Edna’s in Despicable Me. There is an industrial styled storage cabinet/dresser, nightstand and desk. Loews has really spared no details as even the lighting and paint on the walls really fits with the theme. I will say from looking at pictures another winner’s room, that each room is a little different. For instance her room had a table and ours didn’t.
As a mom, I loved the room for a few reasons. First, it’s cool and my boys liked it. Secondly, it gave my family more space but didn’t compromise their safety. Because there’s only one entrance to the kid’s room through the adult room, I didn’t have to sleep lightly listening to make sure they didn’t wander to the hotel door or that someone else could possibly get in (I know they had security locks at the top but still!) I would even think this room would be awesome for families with teens because there’s no sneaking out, access to a minibar or telephone to make long distance charges.
Since I can show you much better than I can tell you, here’s a video of the suite! I hope you get to visit for yourself. I’m sure it’ll make your family Happy.
