A year or so ago, I asked my husband to rate me on a scale of 1 – 10 as a wife and mother. He didn’t rate me a perfect 10 and I don’t know that I really was expecting it. That conversation is one of the turning points made me think differently about how I approach my family life. I keep up my certifications for professional reasons, I attend blogger conferences for professional development but am I as deliberate about being a wife and mother?
With this in mind, I jumped at the chance to review a copy of the book, Get the Behavior You Want…Without Being the Parent You Hate! I don’t have tons of time for reading but this seemed like a perfect book for me because I want well-behaved children without having to yell, threaten or take things away. Maybe it’s just me who has to resort to the negative behaviors. If you’re children are perfect, this is not the book for you.
Here’s Why I Loved It
First, I loved that Dr. G started the book off by saying she is only a parenting expert on the four kids who live in her house. Wow, what a neat concept from an expert! But she totally gets my philosophy on parenting, you know your children best. Also, I love that Dr. G acknowledges the time limits most people face and suggests that you look at the table of contents to find issue that’s most pressing to your family now and start there. It’s also written very conversationally and doesn’t tax your brain a great deal (important to me at the end of the day) with extra language.
I like that there are clear takeaways for each lesson. The overall theme of the book is that we need to teach children the three R’s of life: Respect, Responsibility and Resilience. Each topic (i.e. “Teach Kids to Get Themselves Clean”) is addressed in a chapter with practical and age-appropriate lessons on how implement these lessons with your children. The final section of the book, “Making Change Happen: How to Actually Get Kids to Do This Stuff”, is for parents. It provides practical suggestions that you can implement with your family right away with the understanding that true results will come over time.
Overall, I highly recommend that you get this book right away. Here’s a link to purchase via Amazon where’s available in both paperback and Kindle versions but it’s also available at Barnes & Noble and wherever better books are sold. I’ll even do you one better and send you a copy because I believe in it so much! Just enter the giveaway below to win a copy of the book. I’m sure it will help another family as much as it’s helped me.
Tell me, what’s the pain point for your family and where do you need the most help with your children, respect, responsibility or resilience?
