When one of your friends is marking her fortieth birthday, you want to have an experience that marks the full significance of the occasion. Having visited the Mandarin Oriental, Atlanta recently, I knew that this was going to be an absolutely perfect place for a Spa Day and Girlfriends Getaway in Atlanta and was thrilled when they agreed to host myself and two friends. I had a partner to plan for the perfect event and can honestly say there is nothing that we would change; our stay met and exceeded every expectation for the weekend.
The best way that I can explain our visit was multi-sensory luxury experience. That description is much more of a mouthful than my usual descriptions of the properties that we stay in but it’s really the best way for me to summarize the time we spent as guests and fully being enveloped in all the details.
Sights of the Mandarin Oriental, Atlanta
Taking time to check in, I was struck by how beautifully designed the art in the public spaces and even in the rooms/suites. Each piece from the foyer to the spa welcome desk works together to create a beautifully curated gallery. It didn’t surprise me to learn that the Mandarin Oriental, Atlanta actually has partnered with a local galley, Bill Lowe Gallery, to showcase a rotating contemporary art collection. The pieces capture the spirit and brand of the MOA by working with the floral displays to really delight you visually.
The guest room experience was just as pleasant of a sight because I felt like I was a guest in a private home; not yet another generic guest checking into yet another room for business travel. The sitting area had two velvet covered wingback chairs and an ottoman that welcomed me to sit and relax. After a dinner party, it was the perfect place to sit back and relax with a toast to kick off the weekend.
MOA also has a private Garden, which is an unexpected retreat right in the heart of the Buckhead. During my visit, it was being prepared for a wedding but it would be the perfect place for an impromptu photo shoot or few minutes to relax.
Sounds of the Mandarin Oriental, Atlanta
Between myself and my two friends who stayed for the Girlfriends Getaway, we have a total of 9 children. As you can imagine, our homes may have just a bit of rambunctiousness on a daily basis and even more once they’re all together. Walking through the hallways was a soothing experience to my soul because I wasn’t hearing their bumping, running and just general loudness.
Instead, it was replaced by the gentle sounds of walking in plushy carpeted hallways. MOA is so thoughtful in minimizing sounds that they even have removable noiseproofing materials in the doors between connecting rooms.
Scents of Mandarin Oriental, Atlanta
There was such a fragrant aroma in the air when walking through the foyer and lobby that I had to ask what it was that I inhaling. I was delighted to know that there are five signature Mandarin Oriental scents developed exclusively for the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group by Aromatherapy Associates.
Mandarin Oriental’s signature product line was created according to the oriental principles of five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal and water. Bringing together the purest plant and flower oils from east and west, the blends reflect the unique balancing properties of each of the elements. From the stimulating influence of earth to the releasing force of wood, each blend lends its own restorative effect depending on the needs of the individual.
The use of these scents was a key difference in my experience because as they rotated during our stay, I was completely aware of my surroundings and I was entering a new space. After spending the afternoon shopping in the area and coming back in, the scents had the greatest impact because they were such a contrast to the outside world and helped me transition into a state of relaxation.
Touch at the Mandarin Oriental, Atlanta
We experienced one of the signature treatments, the Oriental Essence Massage at The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Atlanta.
This massage centers on all stress areas of the body. Utilizing our Signature Quintessence oil blended with warming ginger, uplifting mandarin and sacred frankincense all come together to realign the mind and emotions.
One of the women in the relaxation suite of the spa who finished her service while I was waiting came out and announced to her friends that it was an “orgasmic experience.” I can say with a great deal of confidence that she was 100% correct. The masseuses are true professionals and they rely on your other senses to really relax you.
The Spa suite is perfectly adjusted to ensure you have a well-rounded relaxation experience. Before the service, you have the option of spending time in the relaxation suite with the options of a signature tea blend or freshly flavored water. Your service provider escorts you to a service room with light music playing, the table is heated to begin the service and a base of coconut oil carries the signature scents. Being at the MOA spa reminded me that I need to invest the time in my relaxation and lesser spas aren’t worth a visit.
In our sleeping room, everything we touched was a delight from the beds that encouraged us to sleep in until 9:00 am(!) or the signature line of bath products or even the quality of the carpet. Even the car service as the Mandarin Oriental, Atlanta gives you the luxury of touch. We choose to walk over to nearby shopping but the hotel’s complimentary house car, a Tesla Model S, could have taken us well.
Taste at the Mandarin Oriental, Atlanta
To help us celebrate the birthday, the pastry chef surprised the honoree with a chocolate cake that was sinfully rich. The ganache was so smooth and creamy that it melted as soon as you placed it on your tongue. Each layer of the cake was moist and dense and the outside was covered in the lighted chocolate adornments for a cake that satisfied but was not overdone or too rich.
Mandarin Oriental, Atlanta also offers a full service menu for breakfast, lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch in their onsite restaurant, The Café & Bar. The menu is guided by modern American classics but also influenced locally available, organic ingredients.
For the fall, the Bar is offering a full line of signature Autumnal Cocktails influenced by Atlanta’s home in the South. The GEORGIA PEACH (made with Jasmine infused vodka l combier peach liquor l fresh lime l simple syrup) and the GINGER SAINT (made with Uncle val’s botanical gin l house infused ginger syrup l st. germain l fresh lemon l mint) are both reasons why I need to make a return visit sooner rather than later.

The Overall Experience
Mandarin Oriental Atlanta provides the highest levels of customer service. Prepare to be wowed at every turn, not only with the big things but also the little things. It was awesome to hear everyone wish our honoree a happy birthday throughout the hotel.
Another little detail that I loved was our reservation listed three names and in our room, there were three of all the amenities. There were three robes hanging on the back, three slippers next to the bed and three shower caps in a bathroom drawer. I haven’t been at a property that followed through with details at this level.
I know I’ve raved about my time at the Mandarin Oriental, Atlanta but it was truly the perfect hotel to celebrate such a grand occasion as a 40th birthday. With 127 rooms at the Atlanta property and only six properties in the Americas, they are a five-star hotel with Southern charm. I would only wish that you consider them for your special occasion and enjoy the full multi-sensory experience for yourself.
