I recently attended a Tech and Travel event here in Atlanta sponsored by the Consumer Technology Association, Traveling Mom and Techlicious.com. I left there feeling like a kid in Toys R Us. I went in searching for tech holiday gifts; my husband is a huge tech guy and I always need something new and cutting edge for him. I can’t tell you how many of the items I saw and decided I could use immediately.
During the presentation, I realized that my search for tech holiday gifts to wow my husband isn’t unique but I also needed to include my sons (and even myself) on my list for holiday tech with a few stocking stuffers and memory keepers as well. Here are the things that made my heart sing and I’m hoping to have under the tree for Christmas, if not before!
Smart Homes for the Holidays
Right now, there are some pretty big things going on in the world of tech. According to the CTA July 2016 Sales and Forecast, the top tech is going to be Virtual Reality, Drones, Smart Home, Wearables and 4K Ultra HD Ecosystem. The smart home items were things I felt like we needed in our home like yesterday.
Smart Home tech may not seem like the perfect holiday gift but they really are because they’re practical AND fun to operate. Plus knowing that they’re going to save you money long-term is a huge gift in our family.
When we used to travel, I would set our thermostat to increase the temperature the day we’d be returning even if it was a three week trip. That is not cost effective but with this new Honeywell Thermostat, we can adjust the Lyric app to change the temperature when we’re on the way home. It even has a geofencing capability, to measure the location of my smartphone and adjust itself! The average savings is $131 to $145 a year….this is going in our house.
Honeywell also makes the Lyric Water Leak and Freeze Detector. This is a sensor that determines the humidity level, temperature and water to determine if there’s a leak while you’re away and send an indicator to your app. We had a situation a few years ago that I would have appreciated having this for.
Sleep is a huge issue in our house and when I saw this White Ambiance Kit, I knew it was worth looking into. Basically, it adjusts the lighting based upon a pre-set light recipe to provide light settings to help energize you in the morning and relax in the evening. And you adjust it via an app or a wireless dimmer switch. I love, love, love knowing that I can adjust this for my son’s to start signaling to their bodies it’s time to wind down.
We have a tradition of me buying my husband some tech item (I’ve done storage, a laptop desk) and him looking for something but this year I’m pretty sure I have this area covered. These are pretty easy stocking stuffers and they’re under $50 each so it’s a win.
Monster ClarityHD High Performance Earbuds
These earbuds are reasonable enough that if they get lost or ran through the washing machine, it’s not a huge deal (we do have two young boys and life happens!) but because they’re Monster, I don’t have to worry about the quality of the sound or comfort!
This is a house gift as I’m pretty sure that we’re all going to love it. It’s a wireless speaker that connects to via Bluetooth or NFC as well as has an analog input for any other audio items. I’m coveting the speakerphone for hands-free calling when I’m making cookies or another big project but I can see my husband using this at the server room in his office. I even see my son trying to take this on a Cub Scout camping trip.
Memory Keeper Gifts
This might be my favorite category and the gifts that really stood out for me but I think that my oldest son is going to love these just as much as I do if not more. Again, I’m in good company with you as well. According to the CTA, 61% of people use a digital camera on vacation. We’re not just taking our smartphone but our cameras as well and both of these are items that really can help you capture and keep your memories.
I can’t rave enough about the HP Sprocket Photo Printer and how easy it is to get good prints in just a minute. I saw this for the first time this summer and couldn’t wait until it was on the market to share it with everyone! It’s a compact printer that you charge at home via USB and can print anywhere via Bluetooth with the easy app on to 2×3” sticky-back paper. I have been using it for a few weeks now and honestly, love it. It uses a special ZINK paper so there is no worrying about changing out ink; it’s inkless!
While I have a DSLR, I also loved my previous Panasonic camera and was impressed with the Lumix FZ300. It’s a point and shoot with a full range lens that can capture moving objects with an easy zoom in and in 4K photo capability. Not to mention, it has a splashproof and dustproof body so you don’t have to worry about taking it outside and really using it.
Is there a certain item that really should be on my list that I’m missing? What are you looking for this holiday season? Let me know (and husband this is not the time to plug for a $3,500 drone!) in the comments. I’d love to have a few other tech items on my list in case these don’t work out.
