Freshly updated for 2018, the Volkswagen Tiguan is one of the best compact SUVs on the market. I first met the 2018 VW Tiguan during a short drive in May at an auto show event and fell in love. I was more than thrilled to learn that it would be one of the cars featured at the A Girls Guide to Cars Conference. It was provided for review but all opinions and experiences are my honest assessment of the experience.
The biggest update is the addition of an available third row option and extending the car 10.6 inches over the previous model. Even with these updates, the price is still competitive for families who appreciate value and experience.
Reason One to Love the VW Tiguan: It’s compact but still has the room of a larger car.
The Tiguan is a compact SUV. It feels sleek and I’m sitting up just higher without dominating the road. I can blend in like one of the cool moms. Yet, it still has the third row for a busy family like mine.
For context, I currently drive a minivan. Sometime about 3 years ago, I decided I wanted a car. We had left behind the stroller for everywhere and my stepdaughter wasn’t with us as much. I really, really wanted a car. However, we’re entering the next phase of sports and hanging out with friends so it wasn’t practical.
I like that the Tiguan can get us through the next few years as a family of 4 with two active and growing boys with the space we need and the car styling I want. And when they’re both in college, I’m getting a convertible!
The Second Reason: Safety comes standard.
At all trim levels, the 2018 VW Tiguan comes available with all the safety features that I want and will need with a young driver. In a few years, my oldest son will be thinking about driving and his safety is important to me. The 360 degree camera, lane assistance and blind spot monitors are features that I hope will assist him as he learns how to drive.
One of the safety/tech features that I really loved was the large driver display. Based upon the Audi virtual cockpit instrument panel, the display can even put the navigation map in the center. This feature hasn’t become a standard on all cars but as I drove around the Tiguan in an unfamiliar city, it was a really nice feature to have.
Next Reason: The 2018 VW Tiguan drives smoothly.
The Tiguan is a comfortable car to drive. Like most moms, I spend a lot of time in my car so I need a comfortable car. The telescoping steering wheel and seat are easy to adjust not to mention the ease of setting the memory on the seats.
Driving on different terrains was no problem with the Tiguan. Even when I took it a little off-road, it felt just as smooth as I was driving on a newly paved street. All-wheel drive is an available option for winter driving. Tiguan also has four modes for the best driving experience. With Snow, On-Road, Off-Road and Off-Road Custom, drivers can pick the best mode with a simple twist of a knob.
Also: You can get tons of luxury in a compact price.
The absolute favorite thing for me about the 2018 Tiguan is the price. It starts at just under $25,000. Even with luxury features like the safety options, third-row, leatherette seats and the panoramic sunroof, you can get a new model for just over $30,000. The price alone is what made me first fall in love with the Tiguan.
Finally, And the Awards Go to…. 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan.
While I loved the car, I’m apparently not the only one. While I’m not one to be swayed by awards, they will make a difference as you look at the resale value down the line. We don’t typically buy new cars so if we do, I need to make sure that it will hold its value. Among the awards it has earned:
- Best New SUV for Teens in the $35,000 – $40,000 category by U.S. News & World Report – The judges agreed with my love of the safety features. “The Tiguan’s long list of available active safety features can give new drivers – and their parents – peace of mind when they hit the road.” says Jamie Page Deaton, executive editor of U.S. News Best Cars. “The Tiguan also has strong crash test and reliability ratings, making it a smart choice for families getting ready to hand over the keys.” (Aug 2018)
- Best Compact SUV of 2017 by Cars.com – “The 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan impressed the judges with its roominess and value,” said Jennifer Newman, Editor-in-Chief, Cars.com. “The cargo capability is top of the class, making this small SUV a huge advantage for shoppers concerned about getting the most room for the money. The Tiguan is also a great option for families, earning the highest possible marks in Cars.com’s Car Seat Check.”
Why Tiguan Isn’t in My Driveway Already
I will have a slight disclaimer you really need to check out the cargo space and third row for yourself. I loved driving it but we’re still trying to determine if it’s really going to be the best car for our family. With all three rows up, the cargo space may not be as much as we’d like or need. It’s part of the tradeoff for having a compact SUV. For our city driving, it’s not a concern however we like road trips so we want to make sure we’re going to love it for the next 6 years or so, even if we add a new member of the family.Whatever we choose, I will still love and support the Tiguan as a great compact SUV.
