Part of our homeschool routine each day is starting off with reading from a kids devotional and my son would like you to know that his new favorite is Every Day with God from VeggieTales. We were using another one but he prefers this as a kids devotional because “it’s short and talks about God.” I wish I could tell you that he loves learning from it or so much more but that was his reasoning and I can’t argue with his honest opinion.
From my perspective as a parent, it’s a pretty comprehensive devotional for my children now at 8 and 4 because it provides them a simple introduction to a daily devotional, is written at their levels and ties in with the other parts of the VeggieTales line.
It is a Simple Kids Devotional
The first reason I’d recommend it is because it’s a simple outline and doesn’t take long to read. The format for each day is a line of scripture, two paragraphs on the central theme of the scripture, a Thought of the Day and a Pray Today. This shows them that talking to God doesn’t have to be long or even the most formal thing but rather just connecting with God.
The Themes and References Are Timeless
The themes in the devotional are timeless and the references are universal. When an item is referenced, it’s an item that’s relatable to all children regardless of income or exposure. The items are things like pictures, butterflies, balls. I love that it’s written without a nod to our current technology but they still seem appropriately modern. This devotional could be sent to children who don’t have access to tons of things and they can relate or it can be something I hold for my grandchildren and I would imagine they’d be able to relate too.
You Can Start at Day One
There are 365 devotions but the book begins at Day One without a specific date. This allows for our busy travel schedule in my house; we don’t have to worry about trying to bring it along to stay on travel. Like God’s love for us, we know it’s there wherever we’re ready to access it.
There is Bonus Section of Memory Verses
After the end of the devotionals, there are 11 pages of memory verses for your children to learn under the heading “Know it By Heart.” These are easy but core verses for everyone to remember (I kind of had forgotten them myself); I could see them being used as a monthly verse for your family to remember each day.
If you’re looking for a kids devotional or even just a way to make God more accessible to your children, I highly recommend this Every Day with God devotional.
