One of the things I love is that the Obamas have made me feel more like this White House belongs to me. It may be they also had young children or because my son was born the year President Obama was elected or that I’ve been here three times during this administration. Whatever the case, the Obamas are out the door but they’re hosting my absolute favorite of the year for the last time, The White House Easter Egg Roll.
Sadly, my family isn’t going this year but here are the tips I have from our visit to ensure you have a great time.
The event is rain or shine. From the website, Guests may bring umbrellas without metal tips into the event space. In the event of severe or dangerous weather conditions, please call the Visitors Office 24 Hour Hotline for up to date event information at 202-465-7041. But plan accordingly and do not bring in prohibited items.
Dress for going to an outdoor event. This is the White House but it’s the South Lawn, not Oval Office; lawn being the key phrase. Leave your Sunday Best at home and let your family have a great time on the grass. There are stations that encourage movement for the Let’s Move Initiative, places to dye eggs and other crafts. The year we went it was 75 degrees and there dads in suits and ties sweating tons.
Get in line early. You have a ticketed time for entry but I recommend getting in line an hour or more before that time. We waited in lines for more than an hour which limited our two hours on the lawn.
Be prepared for lines and waiting. This is a popular event and you will be in line. During the entry lines, there were staff handing out water and snacks but it would have been helpful to bring an umbrella for the sun. Bring entertainment, snacks and maybe even a sandwich if it’s around lunchtime. Making sure your child is comfortable is going to go a long way for everyone having a great day. If your child sometimes uses about a stroller, this is one event I strongly recommend bringing it. Even if it’s a cheap umbrella you ditch at the end of the event.
Plan your day. You’ll be given a program once you’re in listing all the different events. Spend two minutes mapping out what are MUST DO’s for your family and what time they are. If your daughter is dying to see her favorite tennis player, then plan to be there 5 – 10 minutes early to get a prime spot and skip the egg hunting station. There is main event of the egg roll, dying eggs, chef demonstrations, performers on the main stage, craft stations, reading stations, exercise demos, etc.
Start at the bottom. Another mom friend recommend that you start at the bottom of the lawn and work your way up. The south end of the lawn has several of the craft activities, an egg hunt area, a section of the White House Garden and sports areas. Most people head to White House as they first enter but it’s less crowded on the south end at the beginning.
Be gracious and please share with us! It goes without saying that there are tons of people who would have loved to go and there will be a ton of people there. Take your best “let it go” attitude and have a great time. Also, please share your pictures. We are all going to eagerly following along.
AND for the friends at home like me, here’s a special giveaway. I’m giving away a collection of the official 2016 White House Easter Egg Roll Souvenir Eggs.
